    The Alliance française in Paris is a testing center for the civics exam

        Overview

        Are you applying for a multi-year residence permit, a French residence permit, or French citizenship for the first time? 

        The Civic Exam is an official exam, developed by the French Ministry of the Interior, that assesses knowledge of French society, its values, and how it functions.

        You can practice using this quiz, developed by the France Fraternité association, which offers 50 questions to help you prepare for the civics exam for free.

        How works this exam?

        The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions divided into 5 topics and is taken on a computer.   

        This test consists of:   

        28 questions on knowledge of specific concepts organized by topic (a list of official questions is available on the Civic Education website);   

        12 practical exercises in which you will apply this knowledge to a specific context (or case).

        Public
        This exam will become mandatory in France as of January 1, 2026, for initial applications for multi-year residence permits, permanent residence permits, or naturalization.  Note: A certificate of passing the Civic Exam is not required for renewal applications.
        This exam is available in three different versions, depending on your specific needs:
        - Civic exam for the Multi-Year Residence Permit (CSP) 
        - Civic Exam (Resident Card [CR])  
        - Civic exam (Naturalization track)  
        There are different levels of difficulty depending on the type of residence permit sought (CSP or CR).

        The Civic Exam does not apply to individuals applying for a Temporary Residence Card (CST) for the first time. Please note:
        CST (1 year): first residence permit, no civic exam required;
        CSP (2 to 4 years): Issued after the CST; mandatory civic exam.

        Practical Information
        The exam is administered exclusively on a computer. 
        You will receive a notice one week before the exam, specifying the exact time of the exam.
