The TEF IRN – French assessment test
What is the purpose of the TEF IRN?
Recognized by the Department of Homeland Security, it allows foreign nationals aged 16 and over to certify their level of French for citizenship (A1), residence permits (A2), resident cards or work in private security (B1), and applications for French citizenship (B2).
The TEF IRN is an adaptive test. All tests take place on a single day.

The DELF – Diploma in French Language Studies
The DELF is an official diploma from the French Ministry of Education, issued by France Éducation International. It consists of four independent levels (A1, A2, B1, B2), corresponding to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The DALF – Advanced Diploma in French Language
The DALF is an official diploma from the French Ministry of Education, issued by France Éducation International for levels C1 and C2. It is intended for advanced learners. It is often required for admission to university studies or for positions with high language requirements.

The Alliance française in Paris offers exam sessions throughout the year to certify your level of French.
How will I receive my exam results?
By email, within two weeks for the TEF and six weeks for the DELF and DALF.
What form of identification must be presented on the day of the exam?
A valid, original form of identification (ID card, passport, residence permit). This is essential for both the oral and written exams.
Which French language certificate is valid for life?
The DELF and DALF certificates are valid for life.
